Weight Loss Guidance For Your Teenager

Teenagers are very sensitive about the way they look. For teens who are overweight, their self-esteem can be affected. Teens need to be guided in how they look at themselves. Regardless of the physical shape they are in, they need a healthy outlook on their lives. If you see your teenager feeling negatively about his weight, here is a guide that can help you address this issue.

First of all, your teenager needs to get a complete physical exam from his doctor. Only his doctor should determine if he is really overweight. It is always best to get an opinion from a medical professional.

If it is determined that your teen is overweight, there are healthy ways for you to help him lose that weight. Evaluate the types of foods that you are serving to your family. You should be serving plenty of vegetables. The meats should be lean cuts. Breads should be made from whole grains. Serve more fish and chicken, which are good sources of lean protein. Avoid treats that contain a lot of sugar. For dessert, serve fruit with some yogurt. Healthy foods do not have to be boring. If your teen likes to cook, get him involved with prepping for the meals.

Tip: When on a weight loss program, view high calorie foods as a treat amidst your regular foods. For example, when you indulge in a piece of cake, include a serving of fresh fruit to help you control your portion of cake.

Be watchful on what your child is eating at school. If he eats at the cafeteria, get a copy of the menu. Choices at school are often focused on convenience rather than total nutrition. You may want to think about packing your child a lunch for school. Make lunch interesting instead of just the ordinary sandwich. You can make fajita wraps, panninis, pita bread filled with good stuff, and lots of other ideas. You can even pack your child a hot lunch by using a food thermos that can keep food warm. The bottom line is that you should be aware of what your child is eating when he is not at home. That may be the cause of the weight gain.

Tip: Losing weight does not need to be difficult. First, you need to eliminate certain foods from your diet.

Sit down with your child, and talk to him about how he feels about his weight. Is this something that is troubling him and affecting his self-esteem? Allow him to express his thoughts before you offer any advice. He does not need a lecture from you, but he needs support. Find out why he wants to lose weight and what he wishes to accomplish by it.

Tip: Share your weight loss plans and decisions with as many groups of people as you can. You could even start a blog about your weight loss adventures ! This will give you even more motivation to stick with your diet, lest you let your friends and family down.

The most important thing is to have your teen feel good about himself, regardless of what he looks like. Maintaining a healthy weight is good for the body. If he wants to lose weight to impress someone, that desire may not last if that relationship sours. Just talk to your child and make sure that he has the right attitude about weight loss.
